We all have an individual impact on the earth, which is probably a lot greater than be realise. Imagine how much energy goes into producing, moving and cooking all the food we will eat in a life time. Then consider how much energy and how many resources we use up with the clothes we wear, the leisure activities we choose, the work we do, and the numbers become over whelming.

Today, our energy and resource consumption exceeds the earth's capacity by 21% – this means we now need 1.2 earths to sustain our lifestyle.
(WWF Living Planet Report 2004)

However, even now if everyone on the planet were to live like us in Europe, there would be a need for 3 planets to support the global population.

"Everything we buy, from cars to food to electricity, contributes somethingtowards our "ecological footprint" - a measure of our consumption levels, in terms of the total area of the average patch of earth that would be needed to support our lifestyle. This area - measured in hectares of average productivity - includes the space for growing crops, grazing animals, harvesting timber, catching fish, accommodating infrastructure and absorbing carbon dioxide emissions."
(World Wildlife Fund, 2002)
